This is a summary of Dr. David Bartholomae’s “Inventing the University. Throughout this article, David Bartholomae shares his thoughts on how students are expected to know how to write for the university and speak the language and jargon of college professors (Bartholomae). This tends to cause problems because most students have yet to master this. Students are given a variety of topics to write about and a lot of the time they don’t know much about the subject, therefore they have to invent for the university. Bartholomae analyzes three different essays written by basic writers and points out the common mistakes that they make. Bartholomae quotes Linda Flower’s thoughts on student writers and how students should be taught. She states that the difficulty inexperienced writers have is the transition from writer to reader based. Experts are able to put themselves in the readers shoes and picture how they’ll react to the writing. Both Bartholomae and Flower argue that students would be more successful if they were taught to write and revise for the readers. Teachers and students would also benefit if the community’s conventions were clearly written out and taught in the classrooms (Bartholomae). Bartholomae claims that students need more creativity when writing and use he or she’s own commonplace instead of trying to please the university with the academic lingo. Doing so will encourage our student writers to take on authority, draw their own conclusions, define their own commonplace, be creative, and most importantly succeed in their academic writing.

Reflective Essay Rough Draft
Introduction
Throughout this course I mainly struggled with finding enough sources to support my claims. I also struggled with fully understanding some of the assignments we were given. For example, the multimodal project. I had never done a project like that and I did not completely understand how to do it until I asked questions. I also struggled a bit with the rhetorical analysis essay because Inventing the University is not necessary the easiest academic journal to understand or comprehend. It contained a lot of confusing terminology which made it difficult to answer all the questions and meet all the requirements. I struggled with finding enough sources and information because a lot of the information out there is similar, but you must really search for something different. I struggled with the multimodal project because like I said, I had never done a project like that before. These challenges that I have faced have been a learning curve for me and have been beneficial. I have learned a lot more about citing and I even learned a new way to find different types of sources through the UC library website. I was not familiar with trade publications or academic journals, but it turns out they are very useful. Practice makes perfect so I think if I continue to research and find sources, I will develop the skills and strategies to finding the best sources out there. As for the multimodal project, I could continue practicing this as well. I could also do some research and get some more information on how to make a PowerPoint better. Overall, I have gotten a lot better at articulating my thoughts and organizing my papers so that they make sense and flow. I am a very organized and neat person, and this rolls over into my writing. I do not like to slop something down and turn it in. I like to organize my paper so that it makes sense from beginning to end. I am also a very detail-oriented person, I NEED DETAILS! This plays a huge role in my writing because I do not leave anything out and make sure my arguments/claims are fully supported. These are my biggest strengths because this is who I am as a person and it carries over into my writing. One of the requirements throughout all our papers was that they would be organized and neat. Since I thrive in this area, all my papers throughout this course have been laid out this way. Another requirement for our papers is that they be multiple pages. The fact that I include lots of details in my papers allows me to easily meet these page length requirements.
Rhetorical Analysis
After completing this assignment, I learned that a lot of parts and pieces go into creating a rhetorical analysis. I found it extremely helpful to break up each section and then put them together to form the final product. I also learned that it is a requirement to cite the author in every sentence. I knew that you needed to give credit to the author, but I was not aware in had to be in each sentence. Analysis’s differ from other forms of writing in multiple ways. In an analysis, the author usually has a target audience in mind. This has to do with their goal to not only inform but to persuade that audience. Another difference is that within an analysis you are basically analyzing the authors thoughts and ideas 70% of the time and the 30% contains your own thoughts and opinions. Citing sources accurately is a huge deal within an analysis. Once you master this, you will be able to use it in other types of essays. It also helps you to break down and process information. This may be helpful in a research paper for example. While writing this analysis, I struggled a bit to condense a 20-page article into 5 pages. It was a lot of information and it was difficult for me to pick out Bartholomae’s main thoughts and ideas. I also struggled with some of the language Bartholomae used because I do not speak university lingo like him. Though I struggled with those things, I felt I did a good job with citing sources and giving plenty of examples throughout my analysis.
Exploratory essay
After completing this paper, I learned a couple things. One, I learned how to use and find different types of sources other than websites. I had never heard a trade publication or academic journal. I also learned how to cite these sources in MLA format. I learned a whole lot more about my future profession after writing this paper as well. Exploratory essays are different from other forms of writing because they are not written for an audience. You are also not trying to convince someone about something, but simply informing and exploring. It was easy to not take a position on my topic because I was simply gathering a bunch of facts and information. I was learning and searching for information and not really thinking if I agree or disagree with something. Exploration plays a role in informative essays because in informative essays you are gathering a bunch of information on one topic just like exploratory essays. It also plays a role in persuasive essays to an extent because when writing a persuasive essay, you need to find information to support your claim. We found information is this essay as well. I struggled to find answers to my questions within the trade publication and academic article sources. I was not very familiar with these which made it harder to narrow down my searches. I think I did a good job at providing a lot of information and following all the guidelines for this assignment. I think I also did a good job at grabbing my audience’s attention with my catchy and unique intro. Overall, I really enjoyed completing assignment and would for sure do it again!
Research Essay
After completing this essay, I learned that there is a ton of research and information out there, but you must be willing to look for it. I also learned more on how to cite sources correctly. Research is different from other forms of writing because they are a lot longer, gives expert’s opinions along with our personal opinions, requires background knowledge of the main topic, and requires a wide variety of sources. I did not find it too difficult to find information just because there is so much research and information out there. I did find it a little difficult to stick with only one position just because both sides of the arguments had valid reasons and made sense. Research plays a role in informative and persuasive essays because you need information and research to support your claims. I struggled with really understanding what my problem and solution would be. I thought I made good arguments and supported them well.
Multimodal Project
After completing this assignment, I learned a few things. I learned that requirements are very specific (15 pictures, only 5 slides can contain words, and recording audio is necessary). I have never done a project like this before and I was honestly a little nervous to even attempt it. This form of writing is different from other forms because it is on a power point for one thing and most of it is pictures with a recording explaining what the pictures mean. At first, I had some trouble finding media but once I started going and searching, I got the hang of it. I had to sort of think outside the box of what to search so that it would make some sense. I struggled with laying out my 20 slides because I wanted to make sure I covered everything I researched but at the same time not put too much information. I eventually got it once I wrote all my main topics down and organized it. I have yet to do a voice over because I am not sure how, but I am sure I will struggle with that part of the assignment. Overall, I thought I followed the criteria well. I thought I was creative with designing my power points and with the pictures I selected. I thought this project was going to be difficult, but it ended up being easy once I read the directions fully and asked questions.
Conclusion
After completing this course, I wish I would have tried to write more and extend the required word count. I wish I would have gone above in beyond in my writing instead of just doing the minimum. I am most proud of the fact for meeting the requirements of every assignment we have completed throughout this course. It is easy to give up when things get tough, but I was able to push through and accomplish many things through this course. My assignments have prepared me for what I will see out of this class. I will probably be citing sources in future classes and this class has given me a bunch of helpful tips on this. To someone who is taking this course in the future, I would suggest staying on top of each section you write for your essays. You will not get behind this way and it will be easier to form your final piece if all sections are complete. Good luck!

What is Keto?
Introduction
Calling all those who have followed or attempted to follow the keto diet! What’s the hype? Is it really what people make it out to be? Is it really good for you? Is it long lasting? The keto diet is a very controversial issue within the health world. There are pros and cons to the keto diet and I’m excited to explore those throughout this essay. The keto diet is a low carb and high fat diet which sounds good to some but not all. Some believe we need carbohydrates in our diets to use as energy while others believe they can use fat as their primary energy source. Using fat as the main energy source speeds up weight loss. However, not everyone believes this is a healthy way to live. The keto diet has health benefits other than just weight loss. Doctors don’t typically recommend this diet because they don’t want you completely cutting out a food group. But some still choose this diet because it has the ability to prevent diseases/cancers, improve skin health, improve heart and brain function, and of course help you lose weight which is a lot of peoples’ goals. The keto diet is definitely attainable and achievable as long as you stick to it strictly. Some foods and beverages that are allowed on this diet include seafood, low carb vegetables, cheese, avocados, meat and poultry, eggs, coconut oil, olive oil, butter, cream, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts and seeds, berries, olives, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and unsweetened coffee and tea. This is just a little snapshot of what I will continue to talk about within the rest of my essay. Dietitians should promote this diet as a beneficial and efficient way to lose weight fast. Dietitians should not promote the keto diet as long term, only short term. Finally, I believe dietitians should promote the keto diet for reasons other than just weight loss. Like I said, my purpose of writing this article is to weigh the pros and cons of this diet so that those who are interested have a better understanding before beginning this process. I also want to find more information about what the keto diet is and gather other people’s opinions on it. This diet is so significant right now because it seems to be the latest fad in the nutrition world.
Main argument 1
Dietitians should promote the keto diet as an easy and efficient way to lose weight. If people who have gone on the keto diet, and if they have lost weight quickly, then the keto diet is a beneficial and efficient way to lose weight fast. “There are several reasons why keto is more efficient than a low-fat diet, including increased protein intake. Higher protein intake is advantageous for weight reduction and metabolic health” (18 Reasons). When you are on the keto diet, your body switches from running on the carbohydrate glucose to strictly fats. People lose weight so fast on this diet because they are burning fat 24/7! “The reduction in carb intake puts your body in a metabolic state called ketosis, where fat, from your diet and from your body, is burned for energy” (Eenfeldt). This state of ketosis has the benefit of fasting, without doing it for a long period of time. “Fat burning is significantly increased, while insulin – the fat-storing hormone – levels drop greatly. This appears to make it far easier for body fat loss to occur, without hunger” (Eenfeldt). “Once the body enters ketosis and starts to burn ketones for fuel, most ketogenic dieters will experience increased energy levels and decreased appetite. This leads to the consumption of fewer calories, resulting in more weight loss” (How to). During the first week on keto, most people lose between 2-10lbs. “This is unrivaled by any other diet, but it is also not all coming from fat. In fact, most of this weight loss is the result of the body shedding the extra water weight it was holding on to as a consequence of carbohydrate consumption” (How to). I think this diet keeps people motivated due to the fact that they’re losing weight so fast. They just want to continue to lose and get healthier! Multiple studies have shown that low carb and keto diets result in effective weight loss compared to other diets. The recommendation of using the keto diet for fast weight loss affects the profession and its goals in a couple ways. I think dietitians will have more success with their patients by promoting this diet. Their patients will lose weight fast, thus encouraging them to lose more and more until they reach their goals! I believe this will also encourage dietitian’s patients to live overall healthier lives. This diet pretty much forces dietitians to stay up to date with the latest research because there is still some that we don’t know about the keto diet. Overall, taking the keto route is perfect if you’re looking to lose weight fast! Since people can lose weight extremely fast on this diet, I would not do it long term and I think some dietitians would agree.
Main argument 2
Dietitians should not promote the keto diet as long term, only short term. If people have used the keto diet long term, and if they have experienced negative effects, then the keto diet is only meant to be used short term. “While the research is exciting, there’s very little evidence to show that this type of eating is effective — or safe — over the long term for anything other than epilepsy” (The Truth). Low carbohydrate diets, like the keto diet can cause some side effects including constipation, headaches, bad breath, etc. Also, this diet is extremely strict on what you can and cannot eat. It’s easy to miss out on healthy foods, making it difficult to meet nutrient needs. This diet is, “…the high fat content — and especially the high level of unhealthy saturated fat — combined with limits on nutrient-rich fruits, veggies and grains is a concern for long-term heart health” (The Truth). “Low-carb diets could lead to vitamin or mineral deficiencies” (MacMillan). This diet can possibly damage people’s blood vessels as well. “In a recent study published in Nutrients, they found that indulging in a high-sugar treat (like a large bottle of soda) while on a high-fat, low-carb diet can actually damage blood vessels” (MacMillan). Too much fat in someone’s diet can put them at risk for a chronic disease. “Dr. Heymsfield said he recommends a few things to people who try the ketogenic diet. He suggests limiting foods high in saturated fat like butter, meat and cheese and focusing on foods with unsaturated fats like olive oil, seafood, nuts, chicken and avocado. Consult a dietitian or doctor for their guidance, he said, and ask yourself if you are willing to commit to the diet for the long term” (O’connor). Again, this is a long-term affect and why it is so crucial to keep it short term. Recommending patients to only do the keto short term could impact the dietetic profession in one important way. Keeping this diet short term will ultimately keep patients healthier in the long run. This will make it easier on both the dietitian and patient. Not only will keeping this diet short term benefit patient’s but it may also help them with other health issues!
Main argument 3
Dietitians should promote the keto diet for reasons other than just weight loss. If people have lost weight on the keto diet, and if they have had other health benefits, then the keto diet should be promoted for more than just weight loss. Low carb diets like the keto diet have the tendency to reduce appetite. “Studies consistently show that when people cut carbs and eat more protein and fat, they end up eating far fewer calories” (Gunnars). “Low-carb diets are very effective at lowering blood triglycerides, which are fat molecules that increase your risk of heart disease” (Gunnars). By eating more fat and less carbs on this diet, there is an increase in High-Density Lipoprotein (good cholesterol). This diet reduced blood sugar and insulin levels to prevent or even cure type 2 diabetes. “Cutting carbs leads to a significant reduction in blood pressure, which should reduce your risk of many common diseases” (Gunnars). Keto can reverse the symptoms of a serious condition called metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. “Low-carb and keto diets have proven beneficial in treating epilepsy in children and are being studied for their effects on other brain conditions” (Gunnars). “Here, 10 unexpected changes people following a keto diet plan might see” (Holland). Energy levels increase, anxiety and depression diminish, the liver gets healthier, cravings diminish, and brain function improves. Spreading the word about the benefits of this diet will ultimately increase patients’ overall health which is a primary goal of the dietetic community. This will keep clients more engaged in their overall health and wellbeing. Even though there so many benefits to this diet, some people are still not convinced.
Refutation
Opposing views claim that you cannot lose weight fast on the keto diet. The keto diet is very strict on what you can and cannot eat so I understand why people claim this. Of course there are situations where the keto diet does not work for some people; however, they may not be following the diet correctly and that’s why they aren’t getting the results they hoped for. There are a few reasons why someone is not losing weight on keto. The individual’s body may not be in the state of ketosis. “You’ll only truly know whether you’re in a ketogenic state when you test your ketone levels” (Godinez). You can test ketone levels through urine, blood, or breath testing. People may not be eating satiating meals, leaving them hungry and more like to crave. Even though this diet is high fat and low carb, it’s possible to eat too much fat. “Fats contain more than twice the amount of calories as carbs or proteins, so it’s crucial you count how many grams of fat you’re eating and remain mindful of your fat intake” (Godinez). It is true that the keto diet can be long lasting and attainable, but is it safe? “So far, there has been no evidence to indicate any danger in the long-term ketogenic diet” (Agida). However, there has been evidence that it could lead to micronutrient deficiencies. This makes since because you are limited to the foods you can eat. If one decides to take on keto long term, they won’t ever be able to relax or take a break from the diet. Since this diet is so strict, weight gain may occur if one slacks off. This diet is high fat and that is not necessarily good for our health. “Health experts worry about how a long-term keto-style diet can affect the heart and arteries” (MacMillan). Some say the keto diet is strictly for weight loss; however, there are a ton of other health benefits. Keto plays a role in disease prevention/treatment, seizure control, cancer prevention, decreases inflammation, increases energy, improves sleep, helps kidney function, battles neurologic and metabolic disorders, and much more. Therefore, these counterarguments are not enough to change my opinion on the keto diet. This diet is a beneficial and effective way to lose weight fast, should only be used short term, and has tons of health benefits!
Conclusion
I believe that all dietitians should promote this diet as a beneficial and efficient way to lose weight fast. Dietitians should not promote the keto diet as long term, only short term. Finally, I believe dietitians should promote the keto diet for reasons other than just weight loss. Anyone who is interested in keto should take a look at all of the pros and cons before beginning. “You’ve heard this from us before, but seriously, please check with your doctor before going keto. And if you do decide to give it a try, it would be wise to work with a nutritionist to craft the most well-rounded version of the diet possible” (Glazier). I completely agree with this statement and would recommend it to anyone and everyone. In conclusion, the keto diet is an excellent way to lose weight fast and benefit your overall health! Good luck!

What is Dietetics?
Introduction
Do you ever wonder what those individuals are called who are masters of all things diet and nutrition? That would be a dietitian my dear. This is the career I am pursuing right now at UC Blue Ash. If I stay on the path I’m on now, I will have my Registered Dietitian (RD) in two years. “A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a trained nutrition professional who has met the strict educational and experiential standards set forth by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)” (nutritionED). RD’s can work in a variety of settings including hospitals, doctors offices, schools/colleges, nursing homes, community facilities, sports teams, and many more. I’m not 100% on where I want to land a dietitian job, but I do have a big heart for the elderly so I am leaning towards working with them somehow. My latest idea is working at the Veterans hospital On a daily basic Dietitians provide helpful information about food and nutrition, assess individual needs, develop meal plans, explain the effects meal plans will have on their health, speak publicly about the importance of nutrition, and finally dietitians are keeping up to date with the latest research on nutrition. I’ve done a lot of research about this career but I still have a ton of questions. Pay is a huge factor when deciding a future career so I would like to know what dietitians start out at and how high they can go. I am a very family oriented person but I do like to explore and do my own thing so location is a huge factor as well. Having good benefits is really important as well because you never know what could happen health wise so it’s nice to be prepared. I want to have enough background information along with job shadow training to have a better idea on if I’ll enjoy my job. What kind of environment/vibes will I be in? Will I be working the typical 9-5? Weekends? How much vacation time will I have starting out and in the future? Are dietitian jobs high demand? Will there always be a need for dietitians? Why are dietitians important in our daily lives? What personality types thrive in the dietetic field? Are there different types of dietitians? Finally, my main question is what work setting do I want to work in? Throughout this essay, I’m excited to answer all these questions and more!
Source 1 (Website)
The first source I have chosen to work with is the recommended bls government website. I hoping to answer most of my questions, leading me to ask more questions about the Dietetic profession. The first question I was able to answer is how much Dietitians get paid on average. “The median annual wage for dietitians and nutritionists was $60,370 in May 2018” (BLS). The lowest earned was around 38,000 and the highest earned was around 84,000. While reading about pay I was able to answer my question about the hours dietitians work. Most dietitians work full time and some weekends to meet with clients. I already talked a little in my introductory paragraph about the different settings dietitians can work in including hospitals, doctors offices, schools/colleges, nursing homes, community facilities, and for sports teams. Within the hospital category, dietitians can work state, local, or private. Dietitians can also work for the government, outpatient care centers, or even self-employed. Along with job setting, I talked a little about what dietitians do on a daily basis in my introductory paragraph. “Although many dietitians and nutritionists do similar tasks, there are several specialties within the occupations” (BLS). A few types of dietitians include clinical, community, and management dietitians. “Clinical dietitians and clinical nutritionists provide medical nutrition therapy” (BLS). This type of dietitian typically works in a hospital, clinic, or long term care facility. Community dietitians work more with the community’s health needs. “They work in public health clinics, government and nonprofit agencies, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), and other settings” (BLS). Last but not least, management dietitians. “They work in food service settings such as cafeterias, hospitals, prisons, and schools” (BLS). There are many types of dietitians and nutritionists, these are just a few of them. The last question I was able to answer was the job outlook for dietitians. “Employment of dietitians and nutritionists is projected to grow 11 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations” (BLS). The interest of food and nutrition has escalated in the past few years and will only continue to grow. Obesity is a huge issue in the US and can lead to diabetes and heart disease. “The importance of diet in preventing and treating illnesses is now well known. More dietitians and nutritionists will be needed to provide care for people with these conditions” (BLS). Lots of people are interested in the latest and greatest food trends and since dietitians are experts on these trends, they will always be needed. Wow, I have gained so much knowledge just from this one website. Along with gaining knowledge, I’ve been able to develop more questions regarding the dietetic profession.

As I was searching through UC libraries database source, I couldn’t find an article that answered any of my questions. This lead me to a broad search of dietetics, and also allowed me to ask and answer a new question. The new question I discovered is, why are dietitians important in our daily lives? The answer I found is simple, dietitians have been proven to be an effective part of one’s weight loss. There was a study discussed within this article that was conducted on Medicare patients at a family medicine clinic in North Carolina. “Patients undergoing intensive behavioral therapy for obesity met with a registered dietitian once every week for the first month, and once every other week for the next six months, and then (if the patient lost weight) once a month for an additional six months to discuss challenges and lifestyle changes” (Newstex). The dietitians discussed the health risks to their patients that could take place due to changing their lifestyle and habits. Follow up meetings took place to discuss the patients’ goals and how to achieve them. These patients lost an average of 2.66lbs, and about 1.22lbs per each visit with the dietitian. “This study suggests that the advantages of dietitian-provided intensive behavioral therapy extend beyond weight loss to include associated benefits for Medicare patients” (Newstex). I’m glad I was able to find this article with such an interesting case study. I hoping to find more answers to my questions soon!

Source 3 (Trade Publication)
Within this trade publication, I was able to answer the question of how one becomes a dietitian. A registered dietitian must obtain a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, complete a supervised internship of at least 1,200 hours, and pass the Registered Dietitian exam. For me personally, I am on track to obtain my master’s degree. I will be completing my masters within four years through a coordinated health program offered through UC. “After becoming registered dietitian nutritionists, they must complete continuing education in order to maintain their credentials” (Reese). This means Dietitians must stay up to date with the latest health trends and research. “According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (U.S. DOL BLS) (2019), most states require registered dietitian nutritionists to be licensed in order to practice, but the requirements for state licensure and certification vary” (Reese). To receive the credential of “RDN”, Dietitians must secure the certification from either the Commission on Dietetic Registration or the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. There is an additional certification offered called the Certified Nutrition Specialist. This credential is, “…administered by the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists and requires a master’s or doctoral degree; 1,000 hours of supervised experience; and passing an exam” (Reese). As you can see, obtaining and maintaining a career as a dietitian takes a lot of work, time, and dedication. I’m hoping to learn more about this interesting career as we continue our research.

Source 4 (Academic Journal)
While looking for an academic journal, I was unable to find answers to any of my questions. I decided to do a broad search of dietetics and found a journal about a dietitians personality. This led me to think of the question, what personality traits thrive in the field of dietetics? “Personality traits refer to habitual patterns of behavior, thought and emotions, and have been shown to influence health professionals’ career decisions, career development, job satisfaction and retention” (Ball). There are two aspects of personality, temperament traits and character traits. There was a study taken on 346 Australian Dietitians to compare their personality to their career decisions and pathways. “In comparison to the general population, the dietitians displayed average levels of Novelty Seeking; high levels of Harm Avoidance, Reward Dependence, Persistence, Self‐Directedness and Cooperativeness; and low levels of Self‐Transcendence” (Ball). These personality traits are similar to other professionals in the healthcare world. Dietitians must ambitious, reliable, tolerant, empathetic, and avoid risk taking with their patients. I think that I exhibit some of these personality traits, but I still have lots to work on before I become a dietitian!

I was unable to answer a handful of my questions due to them being more personal and dependent on what job setting I end up in. I came up with a new question, are there different types of dietitians? I discovered 5 different types. “Clinical dietitians provide medical nutrition therapy for patients in institutions such as hospitals and nursing care facilities” (Dietitian). They tend to interact with doctors and other health care professors to meet the patients dietary and medical needs. Some clinical dietitians only work with critically ill or morbidly obese patients. The next type are community dietitians and they’re job is to prevent disease and promote health to various groups in the community. “Dietitians in this practice area may work in settings such as public health clinics, fitness centers, corporate wellness programs or home health agencies” (Dietitian). Corporate dietitians would be the next type. These type of dietitians work in food manufacturing, advertising, and marketing. “In these areas, dietitians analyze foods, prepare literature for distribution, or report on issues such as the nutritional content of recipes, dietary fiber or vitamin supplements” (Dietitian). The next type of dietitians would be management dietitians and they do exactly what you think, manage. They, “…oversee large-scale meal planning and preparation in health care facilities, company cafeterias, prisons and schools” (Dietitian). They hire and train other dietitians and food service workers, budget for food/supplies, and write reports. Last but not least, consultant dietitians. They either work at a health care facility or for themselves. This type has more one on one action with the client. “Some work for wellness programs, sports teams, supermarkets and other nutrition-related businesses” (Dietitian). They use their expertise in food safety and menu development with the help of food service managers. This pretty much sums what the five types of dietitians are and how they are similar and different based on their duties and work settings.

Conclusion
I really enjoyed writing this paper and learning more about my future profession. If I were to give advice to others in the dietetic field, I would tell them that it’s incredibly important to network with other health care professionals. This will set you apart and put you ahead of the game. I would also tell them that becoming a Registered Dietitian takes a lot of hard work and effort. The courses can get pretty tough but I urge you to keep pushing through because it will all be worth it in the long run. Dietetics involves taking lots of different science courses, so be prepared for that. You also want to get involved, volunteer, job shadow, anything you can do to gain experience. Lastly, if you don’t know exactly what type of dietitian you want to be or what setting you’d like to work in, don’t worry! There are so many different paths you can take, so just do your research, job shadow, talk to other dietitians, and you’ll figure it out soon enough! Some of the challenges I faced writing this essay were answering all of my questions. Part of the reason was due to the limited number of sources we were able to use. I also had trouble finding answers within the trade publication, academic journal, and newspaper sources. My unanswered questions were more personal and dependent upon what work setting/company I end up at. Overall, this was a fun and fairly easy essay to write and I would definitely do it again!

Rhetorical Analysis of Inventing the University
Throughout Inventing the University, David Bartholomae shares his thoughts on how students are expected to know how to write for the university and speak the language and jargon of college professors (Bartholomae). Lots of problems occur when this happens because most students have yet to master this. She states that the difficulty inexperienced writers have is the transition from writer based to reader based. There was a very specific reason for Bartholomae to take the time to write this article.
Purpose/Audience
I believe that reason was to not only inform, but to persuade us readers. Bartholomae specifically targets University English professors and explains to them why students aren’t succeeding in their academic writing. Bartholomae writes, “Every time a student sits down to write for us, he has to invent the university for the occasion-invent the university..” (4). Bartholomae is claiming that students do not have the freedom to write what they want, they have to conform to university jargon and mimic their language. Students are unable to meet such high standards and end up failing in the process. Bartholomae goes on to persuade English professors to begin teaching us students to keep the reader in mind while writing. Doing so will better help them understand how the reader will respond to the text. Bartholomae does a great job of clearly defining his purpose and audience to us. Bartholomae targets one main issue/topic throughout his article.
Content Analysis
That main issue is that college students are struggling to write for the university thus leading them to failure. Bartholomae claims, “Every time a student sits down to write for us, he has to invent the university for the occasion-invent the university..” (4). He analyzes three essays written by basic writers and points out common mistakes they make. However, they cannot take all of the blame. Linda Flower argues that the difficulty basic writers have is keeping the readers in mind and putting themselves in the writers shoes. (Bartholomae 8). Most students have yet to master or even learn this skill when writing and that is why they fail. Bartholomae goes on to give advice on how to improve students writing. He makes clear the importance of audience awareness, finding a common place, and taking on privilege and authority while writing.
Organization, Language, Style
I believe Bartholomae used a classical and deductive structure while writing Inventing the University. Bartholomae introduces the main issue in the very first sentence, “Every time a student sits down to write for us, he has to invent the university for the occasion-invent the university, that is, or a branch of it, like History or Anthropology or Economics or English” (4). For the rest of the article, Bartholomae goes on to prove why this is the case and why it causes problems with students’ writing. Bartholomae writes in a very serious and authoritative tone. Bartholomae is very direct especially when it comes to his thoughts about university discourse. While reading this article, I did struggle a bit on comprehension due to some of Bartholomae’s advanced and tricky wording. Overall, I thought this was an interesting and informing read.
Evidence
Bartholomae does a great job of using both ethos and logos throughout his article. Bartholomae not only gives his own insight but uses facts and examples to verify his claim. One example of Bartholomae’s use of ethos is when he quotes Linda Flower. He writes, “Teaching students to revise for readers, then, will better prepare them to write initially with a reader in mind” (Bartholomae 8). Bartholomae is increasing the credibility in this essay by using Linda Flower’s professional advice that she has gained from years of writing. Bartholomae points out that the author of the jazz essay uses a commonplace within their article. He then goes on to define commonplace and when it should be used (Bartholomae 14). The logos appeal is being used here because one is able to verify if this definition of commonplace is indeed correct. Bartholomae relies on his own assertion when he says, “I think that all writers, in order to write, must imagine for themselves the privilege of being ‘insiders’” (10). Bartholomae is giving his own opinion here, one that cannot be backed up with evidence. Overall, Bartholomae presents his evidence in a very clear and descriptive manner throughout his article.
Overall Assessment
While examining this publication I learned a lot of helpful tips when it comes to the proper way of writing. Bartholomae writes, “I think that all writers, in order to write, must imagine for themselves the privilege of being “insiders” -that is, of being both inside an established and powerful discourse, and of being granted a special right to speak” (10). He also writes, “To speak with authority student writers have not only to speak in another’s voice but through another’s ‘code’” (Bartholomae 17). These are just two of the many tips Bartholomae gives to student writers throughout this publication. Bartholomae’s intention in writing this publication is to not only address the issues when it comes to students properly writing for a university, but to also encourage our young writers to find their own niche and way of writing. After reading this essay, I feel encouraged and hopeful that more English professors will take on Bartholomae’s teaching styles.
Conclusion
This essay really hits home for college students, including myself. We’re under so much pressure to perform well for the University and are unable to express ourselves within our writing. I can say that it is very difficult to write an essay for college without having a boatload of restrictions and guidelines. Though this is the case, I will always refer back to this article when writing future papers.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)
This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.
You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.
Why do this?
- Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
- Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.
The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.
To help you get started, here are a few questions:
- Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
- What topics do you think you’ll write about?
- Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
- If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?
You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.
Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.
When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
